Painting "Norman Fox, Montana Western Writer" by Montana artist and Norman niece
Vivian Reeves.
Norman A. Fox was one of the most prolific Western writers to emerge from Montana during
the pulp-magazine and postwar paperback era. A gifted writer of Western novels, short stories,
screenplays, and radio scripts, Fox produced more than thirty novels and over 400 short stories
before his untimely death from cancer at the age of 48.
Fox was raised in Great Falls, Montana and began writing stories as a teenager. His popularity is founded
upon his ability to tell a gripping tale, backed by authentic historical detail that came from his vast knowledge
of the West through both travel and research. He produced work at a remarkable pace.
In 1939, Fox's writings were placed in the time capsule at the New York World's Fair. An avid
supporter of fellow Western writers, he co-founded Western Writers of America in 1953 and
served as both director and vice president of the organization. He was also instrumental in the creation
of the Montana Institute of the Arts and the Montana Writer's conference at the Montana State University, Missoula.
More than 25 million of copies of Norman's books have sold around the world. They have been translated
into German, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish and several other languages. His stories were
made into television episodes and four major Hollywood movie productions.
